Gonna try to post todos that are getting long-term procrastinated here. This serial procrastination is fucking un-believable and hopefully public self-shaming will put an end to it. Keep me honest!
Todo:
– [.5 hrs | 9/2009] Send back Electrolux trim piece. It’s a $178 refund once I do, but it just sits in my office collecting dust.
– [.5 hrs | 1/2010] Call Electrolux about the range burner that doesn’t light right and the knob that has paint stripped off
– [.5 hrs | 5/2010] Call Sears to come and properly fix the door switch on the new fridge that I currently have Macgyvered together with some paper taped to it
– [4 hrs | 1/2010] Fix apphoto so it automatically bins things up (fixed # of pictures per month, automatic splitting by year)
XX [.5 hrs | 6/2010 (7/2010)] Build a batch script so I can drop movies onto it and have them ftp right up to the website
– [4 hrs | 6/2010] Build some brains around the movie portion of the website. It should be more similar to the photos site
– [4 hrs | 6/2008] RSS feed for photos and movies
– [8 hrs | 6/2008] Comments for photos and movies. I keep getting close, but mysql and php and $SESSION fucking HATE each other. Why can’t they all just get along.
– [2 days | 6/2007] Clean out the basement. Completely
– [2 hrs | 6/2007] Clean the hazardous waste out of the lawnmower shed
– [4 hrs | 1/2010] Take the garbage to the dump
– [8 hrs | 1/2010] Replace the 4 billion year old sump pump. It’s working on raw faith alone at this point
– [8 hrs | 6/2007] Put up a guard rail on the back porch. It’s just open, and totally dangerous
– [1 hr | 6/2007] Put some non-slip stuff on the back porch steps
– [8 hrs | 1/2010] Replace the doorknob and locks on the front and back doors. Back door is a fire hazard… it requires an advanced degree and some lock-picking skills to open it from the inside.
– [2 hrs | 6/2007] Curtains for front door and entryway window
– [.5 hrs | 1/2010] Scrape previous owner stickers off bedroom walls
– [4 hrs | 6/2009] Install range hood
– [2 hrs | 6/2009] Screens for upstairs bathroom window
– [.5 hrs | 6/2009] Replace screen on back screen door
– [2 days | 6/2007] Install railing upstairs
– [8 hours | 6/2007] Install hand rail on stairs
– [4 hours | 6/2007] Fix gutter
– [4 hours | 6/2007] Get contractor to build roof sorta thing over entryway to basement stairs / make some way for basement stairs to drain
– [8 hrs | 6/2009] Clean moss off roof and install strip to keep it from coming back
– [.5 hrs | 6/2010] Fix Thatcher’s last name with SSN
– [.5 hrs | 6/2010] Return Moore’s baby rocker thing (been sitting in the trunk of my car for a month)

How many of those things could you have done while making the list??? Maybe I’ll have to take J to get some ice cream while you work :)
Miraculously, I didn’t procrastinate making the list :)
Awesome. I keep thinking about posting a list like this, but I’m not sure if it makes me more likely to do the todo items or less likely.
Yeah, dunno, a blog isn’t quite the right interface for it, either. I was trying to harness the dual powers of peer pressure and achievement peacocking. We’ll see how it works out.
This is actually a perfect use for Google Wave, but Wave’s interface is so odd feeling for some reason, I just can’t quite bring myself to use it. I’d also like to somehow get updates to this one post notified to the top of the blog, without reposting the thing, etc. We’ll see.
In Gmail I use the task list. It’s really simple, add your tasks, set Due Dates, delete when completed. You can reorder it and edit if needed. This works for my day-to-day work prioritization, but could easily be ignored if you don’t use it often. Still miss the satisfaction of crossing the item off. We also use a chalkboard for shared stuff at home. What happened to yours?
I tried using the gmail task list. But, like any other task list there’s no real pressure to get any of it done. Plus I’m not in gmail that much, so I don’t really see it. I’m pretty good at clicking ‘ignore’ an any of the due date reminder stuff. What I really need is a personal assistant to do half of this crap for me, and endlessly pester me about the other half.
I have a chalkboard somewhere :) And a whiteboard or two.
Ready for some motivation to do the safety stuff like the railing on the back porch and the stairs? Warning: it’s pretty heavy. My co-worker was on vacation on the San Juan island two weeks ago with his friends and family. They have two little girls. The older girl is 9, and was playing up in the loft when she feel out of the loft onto the hardwood floor below. She had neck injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Seattle. She didn’t survive past the the next day. These accidents can happen anytime, anywhere. But it’s the type of thing that you wish you had done everything you could have to prevent it. Get the railing up man!
“What I really need is a personal assistant to do half of this crap for me, and endlessly pester me about the other half.”
Yeah I think about that a lot. I feel like I could be a lot more happy and productive if I could just relax and good off in my time off without worrying “shit do I have something on my todo list I need to be doing now?”.
Fractional personal assistant service (like, you pay for about 4 hours of a personal assistant’s time per week). Run it off cheap labor like a maid service. A personal assistant shouldn’t really require hardly any training at all.. We could be meeeeeellionaires.
Hah, I did one I did one! I got the ftp uploader thingy working. It was mostly a modification of my existing batch file for photo uploading, but stripped down. Now when I have movies ready to upload, I just drag them onto the batch file and up they go. Handy tip for calling one batch file from another, %* is all of the args that you passed to the first batch file.
I also found EZ Handrail at Home Depot. I think I’ll probably use that for the porch railing solution. It’s fairy cheap and looks decent and key: EASY TO INSTALL.
