Same-sex marriage. It’s really pretty stunning that whether to allow it or not is a controversy. What kind of bible-thumping morons are running this country anyway? Don’t answer that, the answer is ‘Democrats’, and that only makes it more depressing. Only someone whose mind is clouded by religious bullshit could have a problem with gay people getting married. And ‘civil unions’… good lord. What kind of two-faced bullshit is that. What an embarrassing side of history to be on. I seriously pity anyone stupid enough to believe a civil union is a good end solution. It’s like so many American ’solutions’ to problems… just barely enough to scrape by in a miserable sort of way, without really addressing the fundamental issue.

Really the feds should send out a questionnaire to every married couple that asks if they support gay marriage (majority support would legalize it). Anyone who answers that they oppose gay marriage should have *their* marriage converted to their state’s equivalent of what is available for gays. States with nothing gets your marriage just annulled. States with civil unions get you separate and unequal rights.

Cranking it up a noth, do churches even really have a right to prevent two gay people from getting married by their church because they’re gay? This is the spot where most lefties start to get mushy. The correct answer is quite easy with a thought experiment though: do churches have a right to prevent to black people from getting married because they’re black? Totally fucking obviously not. You don’t get to screw over anyone just because of what they are.

Civil unions are a lot like “separate but equal” and that whole dark history.

But if that is a guide, it has been effective in American history to make these broken compromises, and eventually the right wingers position gets beaten back and full rights are given.

BTW I’m not sure about your last point. You can’t be a real Jew unless you are racially Jewish, should that be illegal? More generally is it okay to have private clubs that discriminate in any way (eg. East African Transexuals only club).

I’d like to think we’ve come some distance since the 60’s, but maybe not.

Re East African Transexuals: the exclusionary group clubs are almost exclusively restricted to oppressed minorities (women-only clubs for example [but don't go arguing about that :)]) Once you’re outside that group, exclusion based on inherent physical traits is pretty frowned upon. I’m quite sure you can join a synagogue and become as involved as you want without having Jewish lineage. Wikipedia and the netz even say there’s a formal path to doing it. Plus, I’d be willing to bet that if a non east african or non transexual person earnestly really wanted to join EAT (awesome), they’d probably let them in.
