Dishwasher pro tip:
When possible, group items you put in the dishwasher together if you plan to put them away together.
This is most important with silverware. It takes very little effort to group spoons with spoons, forks with forks and knives with knives on their way into the machine. Then, when you go to put them away you can just grab the whole batch and toss them in the drawer.

Why is it less work to sort on dishwasher add than on removal?
Isn’t the sort a constant time penalty which you can either do at dishwash time or at put away time?
The conditions on adding and removal are not the same. When you’re adding to the dishwasher, you’re handling things in small batches already (esp with silverware that’s kinda all over the place), so it’s easy to just drop the spoons in the right slot as you put them in. Plus, it’s up in the sink or on the counter where you can manipulate it easily, rather than crammed down in the dishwasher somewhere.
Another issue for me is expectation. When I’m doing the dishes I know I’m in for a slog of work, so I don’t mind adding a small percentage more to organize the dishwasher a bit as things go in. But when I’m unloading it I just want it to go as fast as humanly possible. I loathe the unload.

Oh yeah, I think this is the biggest point. By doing it on load you create one “big work” item and one “small work” item. By doing it on unload you make that small work into a more tedious thing. Okay, I’m on board.
