My Canon i960 finally bit the dust. Broken print head. A $75 bill to replace it. So… just went and bought an all-in-one HP for 100 bucks instead. HP Photosmart Premium. Wow, this is an incredible machine. The touchscreen is great, you can do all kinds of useful stuff right from there (even print yourself auto-generated sudoku puzzles and graph paper). It has wireless that I couldn’t make work. But, it has an ethernet port! Back in the day that was hard to find. It’s insanely fast. Text printing is almost instantaneous. The scanner software has all kinds of awesome features (multiple selection rectangles per scan, for example). The copier feature is fast and it feels exactly like a real copier. My only gripe is the photo print quality is not *quite* as good as the i960. the photosmart is only 4 color, where the i960 was 6. But, it’s good enough for our purposes. It prints duplex (both sides). Separate (albeit just 4×6) photo paper tray. It’s black and anti-smudge. It also has that nice old HP feel. Heavy as HELL. Solid. Good stuff.
