His Notes › Dell Battery Warranty Notes -- His / hers / home / gallery

Lame! Tonight my laptop battery light started flashing yellow and orange, the dreaded ‘dead battery’ light. For the last couple months the charge has been slowly getting worse. I took, a peek at when I bought this battery. Jan 29, 2009. Today’s date? Jan 30, 2010. Warranty duration? 1 year! One day over. Surely no big deal, right? I called up dell support and waited for like 20 minutes eating time on my cell phone. The support guy I talked to was nice enough, but their policy is to have NO grace period at all! He did try to offer it to me without tax or shipping, but that’s still $140! I paid 170 for this one that just broke… there’s just no way on earth I’m blowing 140 dollars a year on a battery. Plus, that policy is just absurd. There absolutely should be a grace period. Plus that was the ship date. I didn’t even receive it until a week into it’s ‘warranty’.

You guys have always known me as the guy who recommends Dell by default (esp for laptops). I no longer really recommend them. If they can’t be even a tiny bit flexible, what’s the point? Sadness.

I will gladly take this opportunity to vent at Dell (again).

    Scale
    A+ thru F-

    QUALITY + RETURN POLICY
C | Purchased laptop from Dell at Best Buy. Quality of screen was appalling. Vista was marginally better than watching paint dry. Keys were sticky and ‘hit’ unpredictably. Hot spot on palm rest caused problems. Missed 14 day window return policy. Best Buy phone service did not allow me to return it. Directed me to call Dell directly. Dell would not allow me return it. Asked to speak to manager. No manager available, so they would call back in 72 hours. No call back. Brought the computer back to Best Buy anyway. Returned no questions asked.

    CUSTOMER SERVICE
D | Minimum wait time, 20 minutes. Minimum transfer before talking to the right person, 3 times. Likelihood of getting someone knowledgeable and understandable, 50%.

    DELIVERY
F- | After knowingly selling me a computer that had been consistently shipping with massive delays, I got to experience it. – Status: Delayed by Dell. Delayed by Dell. Canceled by Dell. Reordered by V. Delayed by Dell. Canceled by V. Time span:Sept 28th thru December 15th.

    RESULT
I reported them to the BBB. Now searching for justification to spend twice as much on a Mac.
